I wonder what impact covers have? My first encounter with all the SA books was the 70s/80s Puffin editions (SA had a still from the film, the others were all simply-coloured AR sketches) - I loved those, read and re-read them regularly until the covers fell off and the pages fell out... Later I collected the Red Fox editions and the modern hardbacks. I quite liked the Red Fox covers as an adult because it was interesting to see new pictures (and I do think most are painted rather well, although I think the Puffin edition that came out inbetween those two editions had the better pictures) - but I'm not sure the Red Fox editions would have grabbed me quite as much at the time. There's something truly magical about the original hardbacks and dustwrappers.
