I suppose the way to read those quotations as Ransome making arguments to support the policy of appeasement and framing the argument in a way that he thought would convince his mother... I do think his writing does suggest that he was appalled by what happened to his friends at the hands of Stalin, and therefore I don't think he had any illusions about Stalinist Russia. I suspect he almost sees it as a counter-revolution against the Bolsheviks as he uses the language of Tsarism to describe Stalinism in his autobiography (the "little father" and so on).
