When I first commenced work in the early 70's, I encountered a 'Langdon Robert', who was always called Jim, and had been since a child. Another, 'Hubert Aubrey' was always Jack. A third chap I knew was called Ron by everyone who knew him in south Devon, but in north Devon his friends and relatives called him Roy. I never did find out his real name. All of these guys were born about WWI time. It is rather as if their families gave them formal names at their christenings and promptly issued them with a diminutive as a child, which often stuck.
