It's interesting to see what young children today think of the original film (read the attached link). Lots of positive stuff, but quite a few saying they don't understand what's going on (which seems odd to me but then I don't remember when I first saw it or whether I'd read the book first, they've both just kind of always been there).

Quite a few comments are along the lines of "it should give you more of an anxious feeling". I don't really mind that idea - after all, the night sailing (for example) IS quite scary. I would love the film to be really true to the book, but I fear SA is the hardest of the books to be very true to, from an adaptation perspective. Even the 1974 film, which is often described as "faithful" takes a very different approach to the end of the story. Most of the other SA books have plots that rattle away at quite a pace, but part of the charm of SA is that rather little happens in much of it, other than the pretty marvellous situation itself. Chapters like "Island Life" and "More Island Life" imply a degree of continuity and sameness which could hardly be boring (because who wouldn't want to experience Island Life themselves?) but is perhaps not filmic.
