3. Swallows and Amazons is the first in a sequence of politically subversive books. While we might expect the games of apparently middle class children in novels of this era to reflect the empire-building, exploitative nature of British society of the time, what we get are positive, gender-neutral explorations of a range of environments where people - no matter what their class and perceived status - are viewed in an open and productive manner. Add issues of environmentalism, single-parenthood families cast in a positive light, and practical "can do" attitudes to handling a range of difficulties, I would argue that the novels are still highly pertinent to this day!
