You could point your friend towards my article about Ransome's politics (see link below).

But I think there are broader points here - not all the characters in SA are middle class, in fact - compared with children's literature of the era, there are far more positive and realistic working-class characters than we might expect. What's more they tend to be the most sympathetic characters - AR is fascinated by people doing interesting work and enjoying it (there isn't the darkness of industrial drudgery but then that wouldn't make the most diverting children's story). Then there are the values and ideals that exist throughout the stories which are pefectly compatible with socialism (whether you wish to see that as being because of some socialist intent or just because of shared humanity and decency).

I don't only think that socialists should give Ransome a go, I feel he should be on the essential reading list!!
