On the Beckfoot plumbing I must respectfully disagree. CF was a mining engineer "type" he would have been well aware of the advantages of a hydraulic ram it is certainly in his skill set.

In PP, the use of the hand pump is really highlighted at Tyson's Farm. I am certain if that is what AR was used to at his place he would have used the pump at Beckfoot. They are wealthy - continuous water supply is an important indicator of wealth.

I wonder what French Textbook they used at school?
