I didn't have a problem with the emails, but between Gmail and my campus email, I've got pretty good spam protection. The problems of keeping computers secure is always a problem, and I will defer to the judgement of those actually having to do the work.
Tarboarders wanting to communicate off-line can always request an email, perhaps spelling out their address in a way that prevents harvesting. As an example: pamcrippenadams AT gmail DOT com
