I certainly agree with you. I feel (it has to be a feeling- there's no absolute standard here) that as time and novels went by, AR got better at the job. This shouldn't be any kind of surprise. There are authors who write a brilliant first novel and never reach quite the same level again- for me, an example would be J.D. Salinger and 'Catcher in the Rye' which I remember as being absolutely wonderful, but whose later novels failed for me... With AR, WD, WH, PP, PM are, again for me, much superior, more involving, than SA or SD. For others, of course it could all be different. Each one of us is a critic, each one different.
