Thanks for that, Ed. I hadn't picked up on Andre Doria at all, and also didn't know he had a vessel more-or-less-recently named after him.

As you liked 'The Riddle of the Sands', you will almost certainly enjoy Sam Llewellyn's 'The Shadow in the Sands' equally well. This is a sequel to Childers' book, written a century later, in which Llewellyn not only keeps the main characters but manages to use Childers' language throughout remarkably well in addition -- a thoroughly entertaining read.
