The British sloop which discovered and named Pitcairn Island for Europeans (although they got the location wrong) was HMS Swallow in 1767. It was named after the midshipman who first spotted it.

The location was incorrect because Captain Carteret did not have a chronometer to establish the longitude accurately. Fletcher Christian leader of the mutiny on the Bounty decided that it would be a safe haven and found and settled it in 1790.
