Yes, the absent father/parent is a common device in children's fiction, but AR uses it so well. In SD in particular when Nancy and Peggy tell of how the GA has upset their mother, and on the summit of Kanchenjunga when they discover the tin box. AR describes the thoughts and feelings of them in a few brief sentences where some writers would take a couple of pages and not achieve the same effect.

I agree, the development of Titty as a character is the most interesting and detailed.
