For all its coyness about not revealing where it takes place, GN refers to several real ports. I can think off-hand of Oban, Mallaig, Portree and Tarbert. The last of these probably refers to Tarbert on Harris but there are two or three other "Tarberts" in the West of Scotland. All are located on spits of land between islands across which the Vikings used to portage. (Or so the story goes.)
