It is a diary quotation, exactly 80 years plus 1 day before you posted the mention. It was published in Amazon Publications' The Best of Childhood in 2004 (a few copies still remaining for TARS members - not to be missed!). AR was revising WH for publication, and finding it difficult.
However, the full diary entry isn't quite as pessimistic:
3rd August 1933. The book simply cannot be done after all. Genia very wretched because of everything, me being ill, the book, etc. etc. etc. so that her life seemed to be nothing but dullness.
I had done 6pp of XXVI in the morning, but simply could not get on. I did some more but had to throw it away.
I don't know what I can do to make things better for Genia. It's really that I am old and she is not. Pretty damn miserable at seeing her so wretched.

Things looked up the very next day:
Genia better a bit, I think. Anyhow happy with the detective story.
And no, we don't know what the detective story was.
