The pocket chess set I was given in about 1955 had red and white pieces, and a book on chess I was given at the same time referred to black throughout, but the illustrated cover featured red pieces. The antique Chinese ivory chess set in Dorothy L. Sayers' "Gaudy Night" (published 1935) are red and white. All very confusing.

And doesn't black always start at draughts (checkers)?
