Wikipedia had almost convinced me that the rush I was familiar with was the Common Rush, Juncus Effusis.
Interesting point about Titty's well. Might the fact that there was a beck have drained one aquifer while leaving a smaller, higher one untapped? After all, the glaciers must have left all kinds of humps and bumps in the bedrock, some of which would have no natural outlet.
