I strongly recommend No Highway too. It's about metal fatigue (yes, really).
And you can't overlook A Town Like Alice.
BTW, Shute lived about half a mile from where I am typing this. And there is a Norway Road in Hilsea, the area of Portsmouth where he worked (5 miles from here), named in his honour.
