I've always tjought that AR drew for this piece of writing mainly on McMullen's book "Down Channel", first published in 1869. AR wrote a Biographical Foreward to the 1949 Mariners Library edition published by Rupert Hart-Davis (and which also carried the 1893 Introduction by Dixon Kemp, who carried the book through to publication following the author's death).
"Down Channel" is principally remembered (by me) for its graphic account of what happens when you fail to mouse your sister-hooks....
