I agree that it is likely that the D's could have been at prep. schools.
However we must remember that some public schools did and still do have an entry age of 11.
I was 11 ½ when I started at public school. This was the usual age for that school. Now they have their own junior school with a start age of 7 (in direct competition with the prep schools). Now, even earlier, there is a pre junior school with a start age of 6 months(!) up to age 7.
This really is a good way of developing a continuous fee stream and providing continuous quality education for those parents who want and can afford it.
