There certainly were. I remember in the early '50s meeting my father off the train in Geneva and before I saw him, hearing his voice shouting 'Porteur! Porteur!' In fact, when all else failed... In Paris in (I think) 1946 or so, we were met at the Gare du Nord by my aunt. At that time it was almost impossible to get a taxi at peak times, what with fuel shortages and such things, and they negotiated a deal with a porter to put the luggage on his trolley and he walked it through the streets with us, to my aunt's flat. And it was quite a long way.
