I think it went out of use after WWII. 'Sprog' was the word used to denote the lowest of the low and 'ranker' used to refer to anyone not commissioned. (from 'Officers and other ranks') Officers and their ladies, NCOs and their wives, airmen and their women. The RAF was very class-conscious even in the 1950s
