He'd been "all over the world" - it's likely some of that was during war-time. Given that he was writing a book, and looking over his old diaries, etc. a war correspondent/journalist is a perfectly reasonable possibility. And that of course is what AR was too, not a spy - even if, like many other correspondents before and since, he had some sort of relationship with the security services of more than one country.
