Real pemmican was a North American native food made from meat, grain?, berries and fat and possibly other secret ingredients. It kept well and was used on journeys and adopted for European expeditions where it provided sustenance in a relatively compact package. I am sure robert Dilley who is closer to the North than I am will have more details.
The Swallows and Amazons "pemmican" was corned beef from a can.
