Peter, I like your explanation. All I saw was an inconsistancy. But as you say, the sound is different. Ransome's ability to spell out dialect sounds is excellent. Those visual "sounds" are a part of the heart and soul of his characters, a part of their personality. When reading Ransome, I get the feeling that I know these people, how they think, how they would react. They become personal friends for a lifetime.
Now, if I could only translate "coops and moogs" (Sammy, Policeman, concerning the Beckfoot robbery in PM).
My personal favorite dialect statement in these books comes from COOK:
"Girt auld hen 'at wants to be cock o' t' midden."
That is classic Ransome...
