I often wondered whether Dorothea gave us an inkling of AR's own process in these sorts of passages. That he would put a real event or person in a story but he might change their gender and where and when it happened.
I agree, though, that there does seem to be a specific gender point here, but then AR apparently did the same with Taqui Altounyan, because there were too many girls in the story (and it wouldn't have made any sense to have one of the Amazons being a boy).
