I was born and bred near Manchester and can assure you that there is
no district of Manchester called Harrogate. If your map shows one, it
is indeed in error. What part of Manchester does it show it in?

Is there any possibility tht you are getting mixed up with the fact
that there is a district of Manchester, east of the city centre,
called Bradford? The larger and better known Bradford is a city in
Yorkshire, not too far from Harrogate.

I've only been reading Tarboard for two years. I remember seeing
that some people didn't realise that Molly was a variant of Mary.
(I think there's a tendency for names which were originally contractions
or familiar versions of others to come to be regarded as separate
names, and given to children as such.) But I don't remember any
previous suggestion that Mrs Blackett was Margaret. There has been
a comment on the large number of Marys - Mrs Walker, Mrs Blackett,
Mary Swainson, plus Maria Turner - any more?

Peggy is well-known to be a version of Margaret (presumably it arose
via Meg) and its use by our Peggy requires no explanation except that
Margaret sounds too formal for an Amazon pirate (whereas Peggy is
perhaps suggestive of a peg-leg!).

Has anyone else ever suggested that the Swallows and/or the D's came
from Harrogate?
