Euston was the appropriate railway station for someone going to the Lakes from London... I don't think it was ever mentioned. I gained the impression that John Walker was at a public school either Shrewsbury or Repton (and joined the train at Crewe)... of course I could be confusing him with Peter of the Narnia books....
Interestingly enough John did not go to the naval college (Dartmouth would start at 12 or 13)....
