And thinking of illustrations, that particular one is so unlike anything else I've seen in the books, that I've always wondered if maybe it wasn't by AR at all. It looks very much like a professional illustrator's work of the time. Do we know that it was really by AR? From his sketch books. maybe?
When I say that his human figures were very much better than in other books, I'm thinking of pictures like p.233 'Someone was patting the chimney' where Dot looks more like an actual person than is usual.
Or even, p.215 'Detectives on their way' where the scene comes to life with a freedom of line, gestures, and depth, which till then was very unusual for AR.
