I have been intrigued by the anomolous treatment meeted out to the
Amazons - almost as if they hadn't had any real life counterparts.
After the last TV documentary on AR I posted a note on Tarboard (alas
the archives are no longer searchable!) to the effect that the program
was flawed because it presented the SA series almost entirely as inspired
by the Swallows. I thought it might stir up a hornet's nest! In
fact it was met with a deafening silence. Are the real Amazon pirates
the Crossley girls - probably yes. But is Nancy Blackett more than the
some of her constituent parts? I promise to send a snailmail when I
return to the UK for Christmas.
