The Lakes and the Broads are crackerjack destinations for boaty types, of course. But is there anywhere (in the UK, please) that can equal — or even top — them? Anyone know of any little-known hidden gems I should paddle off to sample...and maybe retire to eventually?

And can any technotypes please help me with something that has puzzled me for years: why do car-derived boat-engines need to be marinated? Why can one not simply bung in the whole caboodle of an engine with radiator, fan and duct? Surely it would be simpler than fitting water jackets, water intakes, etc...and the engine would run at its optimum temperature. One could also include the car's heater and have a toastie-warm boat.

I hope you all like my new use for the word marinated .

And I for one believe in the existence of Jock. He's a great Northern.

Blue Skies!
