Well now, if we're looking for AR himself in his books, he's Dick, isn't he? Dick had a 'museum' of curious objects, certainly referred to in PM.
Dick always struck me as being the person AR would have liked to be. Dick loved nature, fishing, observing things. Dick was brave, rescuing cragfast sheep. Dick was steady. Dick wouldn't have gone on to marry Ivy and become estranged from his daughter.
