Victor Watson (Reading Series Fiction) is right to say that the Ss, As and Ds are magical, mythical children
Well yes. These are novels, not documentaries or historical accounts. We know that there is a connection between the Altounyan children and the characters in the books, but it's just that; a connection.
AR was writing stories, presumably to make a living, and also probably to calm his own anxieties, to create an alternative set of relationships that would soothe his guilt at his failures with Ivy and Tabitha. He didn't need to make his characters accurate in real life, but using models some of the time would have made the writing job easier- and for whatever reason he got Roger astonishingly spot on.
The reality is that he was a great story teller and the children as he wrote them aren't real; they are created only to make the story work.
