i remember playing war a lot as a kid in the 60's. it was thought to be the manly thing to do. the only time a eyebrow was raised was when girls were involved - that goes for rugby and "american" football and many other normal pastimes that are now being "beat to death" in the media. Children often play such games today ususally without adult supervision and i expect that like king of the hill it is a part of human nature. as a "global society" we of the non third world cultures love to pretend that human nature is far different than it truly is. someday soon what will really bother many readers is not just the "violence" but the fact that they eat and kill fish and consume red meat and eggs - all the while enjoying themselves. in the seventies it seemed to be the pop, and lemonade and all those sweets that did the most offending. perhaps this is the real reason that great stories and storytellers get left behind, they observe and record the attitudes of their times - and we in our increasingly un-natural world find it offensive that others lived in a way we can only (barely) imagine.
on to you. bill
