'Claughtons' were LNWR locos, and apparently weren't very good, as they all add to be redesigned. However, I realise now that AR wrote PP c. 1935, so the engine could have been a Stanier 'Princess'. I still think that he was portraying (reasonably accurately for a non-gricer) an original 'Royal Scot', i.e. without smoke deflectors. Well, it makes a change from centreboards, doesn't it?
