Actually, I was mildly shocked, too, at about the same age, or at any
rate, worried about the well-being of the Swallows, but then I came to
realize that the bows and arrows of the Amazons were probably no more
effective than the play bows and arrows that I made for myself at the
time, in other words totally useless. Same thing for the "wars" we
used to wage against the kids up the street. Next day we'd all be pals!
AR does such a superb job of entering into this world, without a word
of pious moralizing, and yet teaching us all sorts of useful things
along the way. Surely this is why we still value those twelve books
after all these years. And what a pity to spoil them with hang-ups
from the political-correctness movement!
