An interesting comment about having to tell listeners that PD is not "real".
When I first read PD (when about 14) I'm pretty sure that I could see that it was totally different to the "real" stories (with no prompting from TARS or more recent publications as it was in the late 70s). It wasn't "real" BECAUSE it had real violence (or at least unbelievable characters and events) in it!
Regarding the arrow: Isn't it clear from the pace that the Amazons only let it fly AFTER the Swallows ducked? The first arrow (that was fired into the fire) seems more dangerous, especially with the evidence of the illustration where the Amazons must have been some way away, and the Swallows closely gathered round the fire! However I suspect Ransome's unique perspective distortion is at work here.
