You bet he did.
I noticed this many years ago, when I was small, and more of a nerd than I am now. The drawing is simply wrong. It puzzled me for years, in silence, but then, eventually, I realised that mistakes happened, even in thick books. A valuable life lesson.
And then of course I discovered the revelation of the date of WD- 1936 or later, because of the construction date of the Bawdsey Manor radar towers spotted by Roger on their return. A date nailed down! Better even than Beckfoot plumbing...
