Picking up belatedly on the restrictions surrounding the C (or X) word, and on Peter H's latest suggestion of Winter Holiday as a good substitute, it's interesting to note that whereas most children's authors, and a good many adults' ones, like nothing better than to drag Christmas into the scenario, Ransome goes to some lengths to avoid doing so, yet still infuses the book with an intensely seasonal atmosphere, and ends it with a suitably saturnalian celebration!
