I think John O'Flynn hits the nail on the head when he mentions AR's 'English background'. I haven't checked for religious references but it seems to me that AR's writing embodies the typically English (not celtic) attitude to religion that it is part of the fabric, should be left there, and it is just not done to mention it. Just as well, because the delicate construct of the novels could not take a thumping great 'who are we and what are we' type of question. The children have enough on their plate. The nearest we get to it is Dick's musing on the wonders of the night sky in WH before Dorothea brings him back to earth. Dick's wonderment is that of an embryo scientist - a 'creator' is not mentioned. This might be a clue to a deliberate exclusion. Whatever, it's a favourite passage of mine.
