Terry, you are correct in stating that the first edition (unillustrated) of Swallows and Amazons was published in 1930 (August). The first illustrated edition (illustrations by Clifford Webb) was published in 1931. As far as I can tell it was not reprinted again until August 1932, so if you have a 1931 edition it should be a first illustrated. Does it have a dust-wrapper? If so, you have a gem - don't let it become just a reading copy!
You might like to confirm all this by asking Wayne Hammond, who is the author of a Ransome bibliography soon to be published.
