Actually, the first printing of _Swallows and Amazons_ was published on 21 July 1930, not August as erroneously reported in later printings. And the first illustrated edition of S&A was really the American edition, published by Lippincott probably in February 1931, with pictures by Helene Carter. The first illustrated edition published by Jonathan Cape, with pictures by Clifford Webb, wasn't issued until 28 September 1931. There were twelve printings of the Cape edition with Webb's pictures -- thirteen if you count the printing of 1938, when Ransome's own art began to be used, but two drawings by Webb were retained (probably by mistake; they were gone with the next printing). I don't know exactly how many printings the Lippincott edition went into; probably quite a few, as it was still going at least into the late 1950s.
