Adam wonders if he should read Ransome to his younger children. The answer is Yes! I was thinking just yesterday how so much of what I like in books and music my parents also liked, and exposed me to it when I was very young because they liked it. Young kids pick up on that sort of thing; they want to be like their mom and dad. Later of course comes rebellion, and wanting to have individual likes -- I had those too. But children won't know Ransome, and won't have the chance to like him and have an enduring love of him, unless he's read to them or given to them to read when they're young enough to make a difference. This in fact is how any good books are perpetuated, by readers who like them showing their enthusiasm. One can't rely on publishers or critics, who are too fickle in their opinions of what will sell, what children want to read, or what children ought to read.
