Pure speculation but I assume this refers to the picture Dick goes off to the lochs. The bottom left corner shows the picthouse. I assume that in an earlier version of the drawing Ransome had mistaken which characters were on stage.

I shall never know, although I'm sure you're right.
My version (JC 1948) shows the right characters. Apart from Dick, striding away, there's Roger, using binocs, standing on the mound, Dot with her plaits sitting down, and a girl in a sun hat sitting in front of Dot- from the text, Titty.

One incidental detail to do with GN; I'm struck by how much better the lllustrations are than in earlier books. The detail is finer, the figures better drawn. I don't know if AR had just got better with practice, or whether he had had some help from a professional. In, for instance, "The Sleeping Beauty", he has actually drawn the McGinty's face, with an expression on it. In previous books, he's usually avoided that kind of detail (although he did do Jacky in PM). But after all, practice is allowed to make better, even for AR. And in his pictures of the Northern Twilight, like "So far, so good..." it's verging on powerful, moving landscape.
