We should remember that the makers of the new film have not had complete carte blanche to alter AR's stories as they think fit - the plot lines will have had to be vetted by the AR Literary Executors before permission was given. I suspect they will have used a broad approach, probably for the reasons that Magnus describes.
That may not be much consolation to AR purists, but my mind was changed about this when I saw the S&A Musical. Yes, they did take liberties with the plots and even with the characters, but the overall effect was somehow in keeping with the feeling and underlying emotion of the book. And of course, many things they got right. At the end, they got the loudest burst of cheering and applause I have ever heard in a theatre, and I have to admit I had tears in my eyes. The underlying emotion in Ransome's fiction is something which is rarely re-created or commented on - I think we are all too British (or Canadian) . . . .
