Not sure that we should be surprised that the Guardian has got its facts wrong.
AR only worked for its direct predecessor, the Manchester Guardian, although not I think when he was in Russia.
The journalist was probably too lazy to look up it’s own files.
The Guardian is often lampooned in the satirical journal “Private Eye” as the “Grauniad” as a tribute to its many typos and wrong facts
Like many news media generators nowadays, the facts have become secondary to the story.
