Most steam launches were converted to either diesel or electric motors
in the 1920's. AR's description would seem to suggest that the transition had just been made when SD was written. Hense the disparity between the start and finish of the book in the launch description. But your explaination is well worth study.
I would still like to know how AR knew about "Daffodil" in the first place. The WSM commented that this type of launch was nothing special and was a common type.
