The GND is known as the Common Loon over here in North America. Canadians are very fond of them. Please send me all your loons, they are depicted on our dollar coin known as the loonie and on the $20 note.
Seriously although they are threatened by jetskis and habitat destruction and lake pollution, they are still fairly prevalent in Ontario. Their call has to be heard to be believed. AR really couldn't do it justice in print. In fact I wonder if he ever heard one in the flesh. Our Peterborough (Ontario) Corroboree in 1998 was graced by a Loon or GND swimming past as we were swimming and sailing in Clear Lake.

We'll be having another one there this summer on July 8th, e-mail me for more details.
