prob because- (1)since expensive trips to the Continent would be needed-
skiing was at the time a pursuit of the Upper-class (references to which
AR carefully avoided except by implication of course-unlike the Far
Distant Oxus girls who unhesitatingly tackled this as well as
adolescent romantic feelings---). Presumably everyone could afford
skates in the Lakes, - and,like the D's, learn skating at their
'University Town'(RedBrick??) ice-rink--but come to think of it there
must have been some cross-country skis around-- (2)the Lake and the
North pole, sled-sail (I can't recall if they actually tried a sail,
but Nansen did of course), skating, were enough for the plot.
Thanks for the info on the AR Autobio, which I will look up as
soon as I figure out who has borrowed it ...
