Ski-ing was very much a minority sport then but a similar minority to those who cruised sailing yachts or climbed matterhorns etc. The continent was not needed, someone did a ski trip from Burnley to Sedbergh during this period.
Anyway Ransome didn't mention skis so there is an end to it I suppose.
Incidentally Nansen's assisstant in aiding Russian refugees was Quisling.
I am not 100% convinced by Nansen as an expedition leader, didn't he get bored with the Fram and decide to walk home, leaving his men to finish the voyage? I think he remembered that he had a wife.
Anyway puts new meaning to 'just going outside may be some time'
