In early December there was quite a long a thread on violence in AR's books, leading on to a discussion about regulation and control of all sorts of activities. My thesis was that regulators in last decades have been allowed to run amok, and that what we are required to (and more particularly, cannot) do is now overly controlled. I was not speaking only in terms of sailing, but that is certainly an area where over-regulation has occurred.

I was therefore very interested to read today some comments from 1984 of that master mariner Eric Hiscock (in Two Yachts, Two Voyages) whose arguments were along somewhat similar lines.
